   Camilla Crespi

Author Camilla Crespi What helped make me a writer, I think, is my wandering life, which I owe to my Italian diplomat father. I was born in Prague and two months later ended up in Rome, then Switzerland. Panama Canal came next, then a short stint in West Palm Beach with my American mother, then back to Dad in Austria, Rome again. I came to the U.S. (New Orleans) when I was twelve and returned to Italy when I graduated from Barnard College. In Rome I worked in the movie industry as a dubbing producer and got to work with some great people: Federico Fellini, Luchino Visconti, Pietro Germi and Lina Wertmüller. Watching movies for eight hours a day sure helped with learning how to write dialogue. Never staying long enough in one place to make lasting attachments, I learned to hold myself on the edge of my life, watching, taking mental notes of how others lived.

I came back to New York City in 1980 and started my new American life by selling De Cecco pasta in Little Italy. Troubleshooting for a translation company came next, then advertising. While changing jobs I got married to a transplanted Virginian. The urge to write getting the better of me, I applied to the MFA program in creative writing at Columbia University from which I graduated in 1990. In 1997, I became an American citizen.

As Camilla Crespi, I’ve published seven mystery novels in the Simona Griffo The Trouble With series and several short stories.

The Price of Silence, which is being published by Soho Press in June, deals with a family haunted by an old tragedy. Having taken a young Chinese woman under her wing, wife, mother and ESL teacher Emma Perotti finds herself on trial for the young woman’s murder.
